CNN conservative analyst Scott Jennings said the reason voters cast their ballots for both Republican President-elect Donald Trump and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was because “people are tired of fake politicians.”
Jennings discussed the phenomenon of voters sharing their ballots with CNN anchor Abby Phillip after she asked about the unusual overlap.
“The thing that Trump and the AOC have in common is that they both seem to be speaking authentically what’s on their mind and what’s in their heart at any given time,” the commentator said Monday night.
“People are sick and tired of fake, inauthentic politicians who can only operate from a script, who are given things by consultants, whose every move and facial expression is repeated.”
The progressive firebrand, who easily won her race in New York’s 14th District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, said in a social media video that some precincts voted for her and Trump, or for Trump and then Democrats on the rest of the ballot.
Jennings, a staunch Trump supporter, argued that Trump and the AOC have something in common that is especially relevant to today’s voters.
“It’s clear as day the rejection of the political class in favor of the authentic class, and sometimes they’re contradictory, and sometimes they say things that make you raise an eyebrow, but that’s the thread,” Jennings said.
Trump’s “authenticity” paid off with a sweeping presidential triumph that included winning the popular vote and all seven swing states.
AOC supporters responded to the representative’s video on social media and explained their reasoning for supporting two polarizing and headline-grabbing candidates.
“It’s very simple…Trump and you care about the working class,” wrote one supporter.
Another said they “wanted change” so they “went with Trump and blue for the rest of the vote to put some brakes on it.”
“You both push boundaries and force growth,” wrote another social media user.
