Scientific American editor apologizes for defamatory tirade against Trump voters

The editor-in-chief of Scientific American apologized Friday for a “misplaced expression of shock and confusion” after she lashed out at Donald Trump voters on election night.

Laura Helmuth, of the longtime science and technology publication, published a series of social media posts allegedly attacking the Republican’s supporters while Trump was on his way to victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Solidarity to all the meanest, stupidest, most bigoted high school classmates out there celebrating their early results because they’re driving them to the moon and back,” she wrote in a post on the media platform. social Bluesky, according to Fox News.

In another post, she reportedly wrote: “Apologies to younger voters my Gen X is full of f-king fascists.”

The online posts soon led to a backlash with hordes of social media users calling for her to resign, claiming she could not carry out her duties as editor objectively.

Helmuth, who used to work at the Washington Post as health and science editor, issued an apology days later in which she tried to distance her professional career from her personal bed.

“I made a series of offensive and inappropriate posts on my personal Bluesky account on election night and I’m sorry,” she wrote in a statement. “I respect and value people across the political spectrum. These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a misplaced expression of shock and confusion over the election results.

“These posts certainly do not reflect the position of Scientific American or my colleagues. I am committed to civil communication and editorial objectivity,” she added.

Scientific American officially endorsed Harris for president over Trump, only the second time in the magazine’s 179-year history that its editors have chosen the White House.

The only other time the paper endorsed a candidate was in 2020, when it endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, who was also running against Trump.

Trump, the 45th and soon-to-be 47th president, easily defeated Harris last week, winning 312 electoral votes in a landslide victory.
